When we moved into our new home a few years back we found out that the water supply was tainted. Being that our water now came from a well we found that it had high levels of bacteria and contaminants. We weren't really sure what to do about it, so for the last few years we have had to buy bottled gallon waters. I've had to use bottled water for everything.. . cooking, drinking and using it for an "on the go" beverage since it was healthier than a juice box. I knew using plastic bottles was bad for the environment (even though we did recycle them) and especially bad for our pocket books, but I didn't know what else to do. I was too scared to use the water for our own safety.
We finally decided to try out an under the sink Aquasana water filter. Best decision EVER! It was super easy to install and removes over 97% of chlorine and chloramines in addition to lead, asbestos, herbicides, pesticides and more. Plus, the water that comes from the filter tastes great. What really blew me away was what I found when I started doing my research on an "at home" water filter versus bottled water.
Why Make the Switch?
Using bottled water is especially harmful to the environment because while the plastic bottles are recyclable, research shows that over 80% of them still end up in landfills. In fact, plastic bottles are the second most common thing found in a garbage dump. Can you guess what the first most common thing found is? Let me tell you. . Newspaper (which is also recyclable!!). Also, those 80% of plastic bottles that do end up in the landfill will now take over 700 years to decompose. Now you may be like me and happily recycle all of your plastics and papers, but using bottled water is still bad for the environment. How? During the production process toxins that are used to create the plastic are released into the air for all of us to breathe in. The worst thing that I found, however, was that most bottled water (60-70%) is completely unregulated by the FDA. . so how clean and safe the water is cannot be confirmed.
Why I like my Aquasana Filter:
Its attractive! The water filter was a separate chrome faucet that is placed into the second slot on the top of my sink. It turns on and off just like my first faucet, but the water flowing from this spout has been ran through a series of filters to purify it before it flows into my cup. I am loving the sleek design of the faucet too. It works perfectly with my kitchen decor.
I try to take a new step everyday to help my family become more self-sustaining and healthy. My new Aquasana filter is taking us just that much closer to our goal. I couldn't be happier.
